Description

Lytracaney Cai at Ravensyard is a proven working cocker spaniel available for stud. He is honestly my one in a million dog. Trained primarily as a beating dog but also quite happy to sit on the peg and pick up, he is also consistently placing in working tests. He is extremely biddable, keen to please, hard working and really is a joy to be around. In the house he really does have an off switch and nothing phases him. Very sociable and good around other dogs and people - everyone who meets him falls in love with him. He is also a fantastic stud for maiden bitches due to his calm, gentle & respectful nature.

Cai has produced litters containing red, golden, lemon, lemon roan, chocolate roan, blue roan, liver & white, lemon & white, chocolate and black - all sold colour pups have also carried striking white markings. I have personally kept a pup from the first litter he sired and the pup is extremely biddable & trainable and all round a nice pup, this is the same from all pups in his litters and many also inherit his calm nature. Pups he has sired are also now starting to place in working tests and are also exciting agility prospects.

DNA tested clear for PP, AMS, FN and prcd-PRA. Eyes - clear

Stud fee covers 2 matings 48 hours apart and a repeat mating next season should the bitch not have taken. Payment due on successful tie.

🐶 Buyer’s Checklist for Gun Dogs

Whether you’re buying, selling, or studding a dog, it’s essential to take the right steps to protect yourself—and the animals involved.

  • Always meet the dog in person at the breeder’s home or kennel—never agree to buy without seeing them first.
  • Ask to see the puppies with their Dam (mother), and the Sire (father) if available.
  • Verify all paperwork:
    • Kennel Club (KC) registration number
    • Date of birth
    • Health screening results
  • Prepare questions to ask the breeder. Some helpful ones include:
    • Did you breed the dog(s) yourself?
    • Can I see where they were bred and raised?
    • How old is the Dam, and how many litters has she had?
    • Was the birth natural or via C-section?
    • Are there any known health issues?
    • Can I see documentation for both Dam and Sire?
    • Will the puppy be vaccinated and wormed before purchase?
  • If something feels off, walk away. Don’t ignore red flags.
  • Ask for advice from a trusted third party if you’re unsure.
  • Take your time. This is a big decision—don’t rush it.
  • Puppies should appear happy, healthy, clean, and curious.
  • You should be allowed to see and handle all puppies in the litter, not just the one you're considering.
  • Never buy a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.
  • Avoid any puppies that show signs of illness—e.g. runny eyes, weakness, or diarrhoea.
  • Is the whelping pen clean?
  • Do the dogs have access to fresh water, clean food, and adequate space?
  • The living conditions can say a lot about the breeder’s standards.
  • Ensure you receive the KC registration form and all relevant documents at the time of payment.
  • Write up a simple contract to protect both buyer and seller—especially important in case circumstances change.
  • Never agree to buy a puppy in a car park or public place. Always go to the breeder's premises.

🧠 Final Thought

Buying a gun dog is your responsibility. Do your homework on both the breed and the breeder. Make sure your decision is informed, confident, and in the best interest of the dog.
