Description

Working Cocker Spaniel Puppies - Born 13/12/2024

Our beloved working cocker spaniel, Rapha Silvafern Nipper, gave birth to a litter of puppies, born in the early hours of 13th December 2024.

Mum:

Rapha is an exceptional working dog with a fantastic temperament, impressive pedigree, and proven working capabilities. She is compact and strikes the perfect balance between an athletic and driven dog, as well as happy for a cuddle and lots of love.

Fun fact: she is half-sister to HRH William & Kate’s dog, Orla.

Rapha came from Silvafern Gundogs in July 2021 which is a privately owned kennel based in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire devoted to breeding and training Labradors and Cocker Spaniels for work in the shooting field.

Dad:

The sire, Sparky OFTW FarlaVale Ebor, is an outstanding working cocker spaniel from the renowned Farlavale line, based just outside of York. With a distinguished pedigree and an impeccable reputation as a stud, Sparky brings intelligence, agility, and an affectionate nature to his pups. An extremely powerful and compact dog, with a temperament to die for. His conformation is just lovely and his action is everything cocker.

Sparky is a son of Skye OFTW and his sire is the 2019 Cocker Championship winner FTCH Kiltonbeck Rollo; so his breeding is impeccable!

Hereditary clear of AMS, FN and prcd-PRA. His very trainable and biddable nature have made him a joy to train and work. He has had a very successful trialling career so far, picking up many Field trial awards including winning the Midland Counties Open Field Trial in Dec 22, qualifying him for the Cocker Championships.

🐶 Buyer’s Checklist for Gun Dogs

Whether you’re buying, selling, or studding a dog, it’s essential to take the right steps to protect yourself—and the animals involved.

  • Always meet the dog in person at the breeder’s home or kennel—never agree to buy without seeing them first.
  • Ask to see the puppies with their Dam (mother), and the Sire (father) if available.
  • Verify all paperwork:
    • Kennel Club (KC) registration number
    • Date of birth
    • Health screening results
  • Prepare questions to ask the breeder. Some helpful ones include:
    • Did you breed the dog(s) yourself?
    • Can I see where they were bred and raised?
    • How old is the Dam, and how many litters has she had?
    • Was the birth natural or via C-section?
    • Are there any known health issues?
    • Can I see documentation for both Dam and Sire?
    • Will the puppy be vaccinated and wormed before purchase?
  • If something feels off, walk away. Don’t ignore red flags.
  • Ask for advice from a trusted third party if you’re unsure.
  • Take your time. This is a big decision—don’t rush it.
  • Puppies should appear happy, healthy, clean, and curious.
  • You should be allowed to see and handle all puppies in the litter, not just the one you're considering.
  • Never buy a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.
  • Avoid any puppies that show signs of illness—e.g. runny eyes, weakness, or diarrhoea.
  • Is the whelping pen clean?
  • Do the dogs have access to fresh water, clean food, and adequate space?
  • The living conditions can say a lot about the breeder’s standards.
  • Ensure you receive the KC registration form and all relevant documents at the time of payment.
  • Write up a simple contract to protect both buyer and seller—especially important in case circumstances change.
  • Never agree to buy a puppy in a car park or public place. Always go to the breeder's premises.

🧠 Final Thought

Buying a gun dog is your responsibility. Do your homework on both the breed and the breeder. Make sure your decision is informed, confident, and in the best interest of the dog.
