Description

Otto is a strikingly handsome dog with beautiful markings, he’s large, standing at 26 inches tall to his shoulders and weighing 33Kg, he’s muscular in stature. KC registered, he’s also been hip scored, and is a much loved family dog. Otto has an affectionate, fun temperament and a confident, outgoing personality. He’s incredibly loyal and shows  high intelligence, willingness to learn and an overwhelming desire to please. He has a lot of presence and is often complimented both on his appearance and temperament. He comes from strong working lines based in Cumbria, and although he has not worked himself, he has a working instinct and is very active. We took him to basic gundog training as a youngster and he was exceptionally quick to learn and please. We were advised we could easily have continued with this training and used him as a working dog but decided for our family we wanted to train him more broadly. He’s obedient both on and off the lead. He has excellent recall to the whistle and is a fabulous dog to walk both in company and alone. He is sociable and when we meet new dogs out walking he is friendly. Otto is a  fit, high energy dog in line with his breed characteristics and embraces all exercise, including accompanying us on fell runs, bike rides, lakeland/woodland walking and he’s trustworthy with stock. Although active, he is adaptable and has a calm nature when in the home or garden; he’s happy to be kennelled during the day when required and also travels well. Otto likes to be at the centre of family life, he loves our four young children, cats and even gets on with the chickens. When hip scored his result was positive and below breed standard- more details on request. He is regularly health checked. He has also had a semen analysis completed showing a strong result. Otto is a proven stud dog. £500 stud fee.

🐶 Buyer’s Checklist for Gun Dogs

Whether you’re buying, selling, or studding a dog, it’s essential to take the right steps to protect yourself—and the animals involved.

  • Always meet the dog in person at the breeder’s home or kennel—never agree to buy without seeing them first.
  • Ask to see the puppies with their Dam (mother), and the Sire (father) if available.
  • Verify all paperwork:
    • Kennel Club (KC) registration number
    • Date of birth
    • Health screening results
  • Prepare questions to ask the breeder. Some helpful ones include:
    • Did you breed the dog(s) yourself?
    • Can I see where they were bred and raised?
    • How old is the Dam, and how many litters has she had?
    • Was the birth natural or via C-section?
    • Are there any known health issues?
    • Can I see documentation for both Dam and Sire?
    • Will the puppy be vaccinated and wormed before purchase?
  • If something feels off, walk away. Don’t ignore red flags.
  • Ask for advice from a trusted third party if you’re unsure.
  • Take your time. This is a big decision—don’t rush it.
  • Puppies should appear happy, healthy, clean, and curious.
  • You should be allowed to see and handle all puppies in the litter, not just the one you're considering.
  • Never buy a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.
  • Avoid any puppies that show signs of illness—e.g. runny eyes, weakness, or diarrhoea.
  • Is the whelping pen clean?
  • Do the dogs have access to fresh water, clean food, and adequate space?
  • The living conditions can say a lot about the breeder’s standards.
  • Ensure you receive the KC registration form and all relevant documents at the time of payment.
  • Write up a simple contract to protect both buyer and seller—especially important in case circumstances change.
  • Never agree to buy a puppy in a car park or public place. Always go to the breeder's premises.

🧠 Final Thought

Buying a gun dog is your responsibility. Do your homework on both the breed and the breeder. Make sure your decision is informed, confident, and in the best interest of the dog.
