Puppies ready to go to new homes from start of May

My beautiful working gundog Bess, has had a gorgeous litter of x black puppies. 3 dogs and 2 bitches.

This litter is Sired by FTCH Etomanni Comanche aka Silas.  He is the Grandson of FTCH Greenbriar Viper of Drakeshead on his sire line

Silas is owned by John Cardno and amazingly won 2 x 2 day open field trials in one season to make him up to FTCH. His health checks and pedigree is in the pictures

The Dam is my working gundog bitch Bess. (Princess Bess of the Heath) Bess’s grandfather is FTCH Astraglen Hail (Ash), a fantastic dog from Wedgenock Gundogs / Steve Richardson.
Bess’s mother (Libby) is a working gundog on our Shooting Syndicate.

Silas and Bess are both Kennel Club registered and each side of the parentage from this litter carry an abundance of Field Trial Champions in their respective 5 generation pedigree history. All puppies are KC registered.

Bess is an excellent example of a working Labrador. She is highly intelligent with beautiful temperament. She was an absolute dream to train. Not only is she my working companion on all aspects of running our shooting syndicate, she is our family pet at home.

For her working background, I have personally trained her on all aspects of a working Labrador's duties, this includes working in a beating line, formal peg work and picking up. I have trained her to respond to voice, whistle and signal commands. She is excellent in and across water. Bess works on our family run shooting syndicate with many of her cousins and relations. She hunts hard and thrives on the challenges presented to working gundogs. Steady with livestock, she can do anything I ask of her as a working gundog.

As a family pet, she is fantastic around the house and is incredibly soft and gentle with children of all ages and other pets.

My planning for this litter should give the puppies the ingredients to achieve the highest of standards at any level in the working gundog and trialling world but they should also make beautiful, biddable friends for those looking for a loving family pet. I planned this second and last litter from Bess in order to continue my line. I shall be keeping a puppy so my selection was deliberately designed to give every puppy the very best of everything a Labrador needs.

Having seen the quality of other puppies sired by Silas and knowing he was from a totally different line to Bess’s FTCH grandfather Ash, I had no hesitation in using Silas as the Sire to this litter. I am not a breeder, purely a gundog owner that has produced a litter in order to continue with my proven lines.

Silas has a fantastic reputation in the trialing world as do all of John’s dogs. Sire and Dam have a well-proportioned, athletic physique in line with the excellent working history and proven family genetics from both lines of their respective pedigree.

Both parents have an amazing hunting nose, fantastic soft mouth, natural game finding ability and a stamina to satisfy the most dedicated and demanding owner. The puppies have been brought up in a family environment which should give them a superbly grounded start.

We have monitored the weight and growth of each puppy from birth to date. Mum and pups have been wormed with Panacur at each recommended period.

Puppies were born on 1st March and will be 8 weeks old on 28th April.

All puppies come with KC registration and a 4-week puppy pack as well as free insurance.

Non-refundable deposit of £450 secures your puppy with balance to be paid on collection.

I am happy to discuss keeping a puppy with me for slightly longer if anyone was considering having a puppy and already has holiday or other commitments arranged that could cause a problem.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, I can send additional photographs or video footage if required.

🐶 Buyer’s Checklist for Gun Dogs

Whether you’re buying, selling, or studding a dog, it’s essential to take the right steps to protect yourself—and the animals involved.

  • Always meet the dog in person at the breeder’s home or kennel—never agree to buy without seeing them first.
  • Ask to see the puppies with their Dam (mother), and the Sire (father) if available.
  • Verify all paperwork:
    • Kennel Club (KC) registration number
    • Date of birth
    • Health screening results
  • Prepare questions to ask the breeder. Some helpful ones include:
    • Did you breed the dog(s) yourself?
    • Can I see where they were bred and raised?
    • How old is the Dam, and how many litters has she had?
    • Was the birth natural or via C-section?
    • Are there any known health issues?
    • Can I see documentation for both Dam and Sire?
    • Will the puppy be vaccinated and wormed before purchase?

  • If something feels off, walk away. Don’t ignore red flags.
  • Ask for advice from a trusted third party if you’re unsure.
  • Take your time. This is a big decision—don’t rush it.

  • Puppies should appear happy, healthy, clean, and curious.
  • You should be allowed to see and handle all puppies in the litter, not just the one you're considering.
  • Never buy a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.
  • Avoid any puppies that show signs of illness—e.g. runny eyes, weakness, or diarrhoea.

  • Is the whelping pen clean?
  • Do the dogs have access to fresh water, clean food, and adequate space?
  • The living conditions can say a lot about the breeder’s standards.

  • Ensure you receive the KC registration form and all relevant documents at the time of payment.
  • Write up a simple contract to protect both buyer and seller—especially important in case circumstances change.
  • Never agree to buy a puppy in a car park or public place. Always go to the breeder's premises.
